Eligibility

This programme is designed to support mid-career clinical researchers poised to transition into independent research leadership as first-time Principal Investigators (PIs). Selection will prioritise candidates with a strong academic foundation. Applicants must demonstrate a clear commitment to advancing scientific research in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), with the intent to address pressing local or global health challenges.

Who should apply

This programme for 2026 – 2027 is tailored for mid-career researchers who:

  • Are an ISARIC Member and are based and working in an LMIC
  • Are in the early stages of establishing an independent research career (e.g., postdoctoral researcher, junior faculty, or equivalent)
    • Have completed a PhD or equivalent research qualification/experience (ISARIC recognises that a PhD may not be common in all research contexts. ISARIC is committed to inclusivity and welcomes applicants with equivalent research experience or a strong track record, even without a formal doctoral degree. Please clearly describe your relevant experience in your application. All submissions will be reviewed holistically.)
    • Are ready to lead as a first-time Principal Investigator
  • Have a primary research focus on epidemic-prone infectious diseases
  • Demonstrate research excellence (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, successful projects, or contributions to competitive grants)
  • Are committed to strengthening research capacity in LMICs and addressing local or global public health challenges

We are especially interested in applicants who demonstrate:

    • Leadership potential and the ability to inspire others, collaborate effectively, and contribute to institutional capacity-building
    • A vision for driving innovation and positive change in their scientific community
    • A commitment to mentoring and fostering a strong research culture within their local or regional context.

    Gender and Regional Inclusion

The selection process will consider not only the selection criteria, but also applicants’ geographic, cultural, and social contexts to promote fairness, diversity, and equitable access. We are particularly committed to strengthening leadership opportunities for women scientists in LMICs.

    Member representation requirements

Each ISARIC network may nominate one representative to apply. Networks must formally nominate their chosen representative and submit a letter of nomination as part of the application.

    Additional Requirements

To participate fully in the programme, selected candidates must have reliable internet access and appropriate equipment. If this presents a challenge, please contact the programme team to discuss possible accommodations.

The programme will be conducted entirely in English. As it includes technical discussions, collaborative group work, and peer-review activities, participants are expected to have working proficiency in English.

Working proficiency means being able to actively engage in technical and scientific discussions, clearly present and explain your work, read and critically review academic or technical materials, and provide constructive feedback to peers. Please note that a formal English language test (such as IELTS or TOEFL) is not required. However, applicants should be comfortable using English in professional or academic settings.
