Pakistan Hub PPIE group
“Our Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) group serves as a bridge between communities, clinicians, and researchers to develop studies that are more reflective of the realities of care in Pakistan. By contributing diverse lived experiences and local perspectives, we aim to support the ISARIC hubs’ efforts to conduct research that is responsive to the needs of those most affected. As the group continues to evolve, we remain committed to strengthening community voices in research that addresses health challenges in our region.” – Professor Madiha Hashmi
Developed in 2023, the Pakistan PPIE group was set up to advise on research conducted by the clinical trials unit at Ziauddin University, Karachi. In 2025, ISARIC and the Pakistan PPIE group began collaborating to bring the patient voice into ISARIC’s research activities in South Asia and to expand the Pakistan PPIE network. The expansion will span across the country involving people with lived experience of different diseases from diverse communities.
The group consists of 7 members including previous patients, carers, and public representatives, who meet approximately every 2 weeks. The meetings are run both in-person and online to be accessible to those with varying schedules.
Impact
To date, the group has been involved in reviewing ISARIC research study protocols to ensure they are more patient-centred. Changes to these protocols include considering study objectives that are more relevant to patients and developing communication materials that help study clinicians explain research more clearly to participants.
