Research Prioritisation: Stakeholder Consultation

ISARIC’s mission is to improve clinical outcomes of patients affected by epidemic-prone infectious diseases by generating and disseminating actionable clinical research evidence in both inter-epidemic and epidemic periods.

However, for many epidemic-prone infections, there is limited agreement on appropriate methodologies, few therapeutic candidates progressing through the R&D pipeline and limited opportunities to conduct robustly designed research studies. This is in addition to the numerous operational challenges trials may be exposed to.

In addition to conducting trials, ISARIC’s new programmes of work will include the development of Patient Outcome Improvement Plans. These plans aim to establish a collaborative and well-prepared research environment for trials on epidemic-prone infections.

To ensure that we target the diseases that require urgent attention and ask the most relevant research questions under this new programme of work, ISARIC is launching a stakeholder consultation to identify the priorities for epidemic-prone infectious diseases among the clinical, research and public health communities.

More Information

What types of proposals can be submitted?

We are looking for input on what you think are the most important clinical problems for epidemic-prone infectious diseases (or an associated syndrome) that need to be addressed by the research community.

Proposals do not need to be extensive and could contain as little information as “Fluid resuscitation for severe dengue” or “Therapeutics for Lassa fever”, for example.

Who can submit a proposal?

Anyone can submit a proposal. We are particularly keen to receive input from ISARIC Members and Partners, as well as public and private sector researchers engaged in clinical trials, national health authorities, healthcare practitioners, and patient and community engagement groups, among others.

How do I submit a proposal?

You can submit a proposal online here.

What is the deadline for submission?

The online form will close to new submission at 23:59 BST on Monday 12 August 2024.

What happens after the stakeholder consultation?

After we have reviewed all submissions in this consultation, we will ask ISARIC Members to discuss the proposals. The ISARIC Executive Board will take in to account all feedback and strategically prioritise where we could have the greatest research impact. The identified priority research areas will undergo a landscaping exercise to determine how we should action its clinical research response. An opportunity for Members to collaborate on the research project will then be announced.

Will I be able to find out the results of this exercise?

Yes. A report summarising the research prioritisation feedback will be posted on the ISARIC website after it has been approved by the Executive Board. We estimate that this will be in Q4 of 2024.
