Piero is responsible for the implementation and support of ISARIC’s clinical research programme. This currently includes projects on Plague, Lassa fever, MERS-CoV and Nipah virus.
Piero’s research also focuses on antimicrobial resistance, whilst also continuing work on other poverty-related infectious diseases such as leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiases, and dengue.
He is also the Professor of Poverty Related Infectious Diseases at the University of Oxford. His professorship in poverty-related infectious diseases lies in the 25 years spent with the Special Programme for Research & Training in Tropical Diseases of the World Health Organization – during which he led programmes from basic to implementation research on malaria, tuberculosis, and neglected tropical diseases.
